This rugged stretch of coastline runs for about 90 miles along Highway 1, from Carmel in the north to San Simeon in the south. PFEIFFER BIG SUR CAMPGROUND

The river‑front campsites at Pfeiffer Big Sur Campground are a true highlight for nature lovers. Waking up to the gentle babble of the Big Sur River just steps from your tent creates a calming, immersive experience. Perfect for early‑morning coffee or meditative moments. During the day, children and adults alike often dip their toes or float on tubes in the cool, shallow water. Many of these riverside sites are shaded by towering redwoods, offering a blend of sun patches, shade, and a peaceful, wooded retreat that feels worlds away from everyday life. We stayed in site 178 and loved it!

Sites range from $50-$60 for standard and premium riverfront sites, with an additional $10 fee per vehicle.

PFEIFFER BIG SUR CAMPING RESERVATIONS

Camping at Pfeiffer Big Sur Campground requires a bit of planning. Reservations open exactly six months in advance at 8 a.m. via Reserve California. And during peak season (May through September) spots—especially riverfront and weekend sites—fill almost instantly. Outside of summer, mid-week and shoulder‑season stays (spring and fall) are significantly easier to secure, with less competition.

The campground offers no hookups for RVs, though there’s potable water, a dump station, showers, and flushing toilets. For spontaneous trips, it’s sometimes possible to grab a day‑of “walk‑up” site at the kiosk after 3 p.m., especially if you’re lucky enough to catch a cancellation. Just don’t count on it—planning ahead is strongly advised.

WEATHER IN BIG SUR CALIFORNIA

Summer weather in Big Sur California – Bixby Bridge

Big Sur’s weather varies throughout the year, with each season offering a different kind of experience. Spring and fall are often considered the best times to visit, thanks to mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and clear skies. Summer is the most popular season. But it often brings coastal fog in the mornings, which typically burns off by afternoon—plus warmer temperatures inland. Winter is the rainiest season, with occasional storms that can lead to road closures or muddy trails. But it’s also when the hills turn vibrant green and waterfalls are at their strongest. No matter the season, temperatures can swing quite a bit between day and night, so it’s always smart to pack in layers. Our personal preference is visiting during late winter to early spring.

HIKE IN PFEIFFER BIG SUR STATE PARK

Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is a gem of Big Sur. Celebrated for its towering redwoods, scenic river views, and diverse hiking trails. Often called the “mini Yosemite” of Big Sur, the park offers a range of trails that lead visitors through lush forests, past waterfalls, and to scenic overlooks. Popular trails like the Valley View and Pfeiffer Falls hikes showcase the area’s natural beauty, winding through redwoods and offering views of the Big Sur River Gorge.

The Big Sur River also flows through the park, providing refreshing swimming spots in summer and peaceful picnic areas along its banks. PFEIFFER BEACH

Pfeiffer Beach – Big Sur, California

One of Big Sur’s most enchanting coastal treasures is Pfeiffer Beach, reached via a winding 2 mile drive down Sycamore Canyon Road from Highway 1. Within the Los Padres National Forest, this rugged strand is famous for its vivid purple-tinted sands and the iconic Keyhole Rock—a dramatic sea arch that becomes a golden frame during sunset. Visitors arrive early for the breathtaking light show as the sun dips through the arch, and many find serenity exploring tide pools, beachcombing, or simply soaking in the wild beauty. With only about 60 parking spaces and a $15 day-use fee, the beach strikes a balance between exclusivity and accessibility. There’s no camping or RVs allowed, but the payoff is a truly majestic coastline experience.

MCWAY FALLS

McWay Falls – Big Sur, California

Another of Big Sur’s most iconic natural wonders, McWay Falls —a rare “tidefall” that plunges a dramatic 80 ft from granite cliffs straight into McWay Cove and the Pacific Ocean. Located in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, just off Highway 1, the falls are easily reached via a short (about 0.6-mile round-trip) paved trail that begins near the park’s parking lot  . With no beach access—restricted to protect this fragile ecosystem—the primary viewpoint is from an overlook built on the foundation of the historic “Waterfall House” estate  . Visitors flock here for the panoramic beauty, especially at high tide when the waterfall meets the sea and the scenery becomes pure Big Sur magic  .
