WHERE IS MENDOCINO GROVE?

Before we get in to the nitty gritty details of Mendocino Grove, let’s first cover where Mendocino Grove is! We touched on it briefly in the above section, but Mendocino Grove is located along California’s scenic northern coast, just a few minutes south of the town of Mendocino which is roughly 150 miles north of San Francisco.

Nestled on a bluff overlooking Big River, the glamping site sits within a lush forest of towering redwoods and coastal pines, offering visitors a peaceful retreat surrounded by nature. The area is part of Mendocino County, known for its rugged coastline, charming small towns, and access to outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, and exploring the nearby Mendocino Headlands State Park. This area of the state really does provide a perfect balance of forest and ocean views, making it a must visit for nature lovers.

HISTORY OF MENDOCINO GROVE

Mendocino Grove opened in 2016 as a response to the growing demand for more comfortable and accessible outdoor experiences. Prior to opening, the land Mendocino Grove sits on was a mix of a traditional campground that had been closed and untouched for some time, and private land.

Founded by Teresa and Eric Hillesland, the site was designed to offer a refined glamping experience while preserving the natural beauty of the Mendocino coast. The couple wanted to create a place where visitors could reconnect with nature in a way that felt authentic but without the discomforts of traditional camping. Their vision was to merge modern comforts, such as heated beds, large canvas tents, and well-appointed bathhouses, with the rustic charm of camping in the redwoods. Over the years, the site has expanded its amenities and services, but it remains deeply committed to sustainable practices, working to minimize its environmental impact while enhancing the visitor experience.

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA GLAMPING AT ITS FINEST

We’ve stayed at a handful of different glamping sites, and our experiences have been largely mixed. There have been glamping tents that have all the amenities, but very little beyond the tent. And some that have had all the amenities outside the tent, and very little on the inside. But Mendocino Grove truly does check all the boxes both inside and outside their tents!

The site’s safari-style tents are thoughtfully designed with features like cozy beds, warm blankets, and private decks, creating a rustic yet refined ambiance. Unlike traditional campgrounds, Mendocino Grove provides modern amenities such as hot showers, heated mattress pads, and stylish bathhouses, enhancing the overall experience for those who prefer more comfort in their outdoor stays.

Mendocino Grove offers a variety of safari-style tent options, designed to cater to different group sizes and preferences, all while providing a cozy, comfortable glamping experience. In fact, Mendocino Grove has over 60 safari-style tents on its property, spread out in a handful of “neighborhoods” across its serene, forested landscape. Each tent is thoughtfully spaced to offer privacy and a connection to nature while still being part of the larger glamping community. This number allows Mendocino Grove to cater to a wide range of visitors, from solo travelers and couples to families and larger groups, without feeling overcrowded.
