We specifically listed Heart Lake next, as you cannot get to Heart Lake without first passing Castle Lake. Making them a perfect duo of activities. Hiking to Heart Lake is one of those trails that’s totally worth the effort. It’s a bit more challenging than Castle Lake, but the payoff is huge. The roughly 3.0 mile round trip trail winds through forests and rocky terrain before opening up to the stunning, heart-shaped lake. The view from the top is breathtaking—surrounded by mountains and alpine meadows. It’s a peaceful spot to hang out, have a snack, and just soak in the beauty of the area. While most people stop at Heart Lake, we’d strongly recommend continuing on the trail, which traverses further up the mountain, and offers an even more secluded spot for epic views.

If you’re looking for a more rewarding hike with amazing scenery, Heart Lake definitely needs to be on your list. Check out our HOW TO HIKE THE HEART LAKE TRAIL IN MOUNT SHASTA article for more info on this incredible hike!

PLUTO’S CAVE

One of the more fun and unique spots to check out if you’re in the Mount Shasta area, is Pluto’s Cave. The cave is actually an ancient lava tube, and exploring it feels like stepping into another world. The hike to the entrance is a short and pretty easy 0.3 mile trail, but once inside, you’ll find yourself surrounded by dark, cool rock formations and the remnants of lava flows. There are actually a few caves along the trail, and we’d recommend exploring all of them. It’s a bit of an adventure to crawl through certain parts, but it’s totally worth it for the experience. If you’re into geology or just want to do something a little different, Pluto’s Cave is definitely a cool stop.

MCCLOUD FALLS

If there is ONE thing you do in Mt Shasta, it might just have to be McCloud Falls. McCloud Falls is one of those spots that has it all—scenic hikes, stunning waterfalls, and a peaceful vibe. The full 4.0 mile trail takes you past three beautiful falls: Lower, Middle, and Upper McCloud Falls. The hike is fairly easy, with a well-maintained path that lets you enjoy the views without too much effort. While all three falls are gorgeous, the Middle Falls really steals the show—it’s the largest and most dramatic, with a powerful cascade that creates a stunning mist in the air. It’s a great spot to pause, take in the view, and snap some pictures. Whether you’re up for a leisurely walk or want to linger by the falls, McCloud Falls is a must-see.

FAERY FALLS

Tucked away in the forest near Ney Springs, this short but scenic 1.4 mile out and back hike leads to one of the more underrated waterfalls in the Mount Shasta area. The trail starts near the ruins of the old Ney Springs Resort, adding a bit of history to the adventure before you even reach the falls. The hike itself is relatively easy, slightly uphill

winding through the woods before opening up to the beautiful, cascading Faery Falls. Surrounded by lush greenery, the falls have a serene, almost magical feel—true to their name. It’s a great spot to relax, snap some photos, and soak in the peaceful atmosphere. If you’re looking for a quick and rewarding waterfall hike, this one’s a must.

HEDGE CREEK FALLS

Just outside of Dunsmuir, a short and easy trail leads to one of the most unique waterfalls in the area. In less than half a mile, you’ll reach Hedge Creek Falls, a beautiful, curtain-like cascade that you can actually walk behind. Standing in the shallow cave and watching the water pour down in front of you is an experience you won’t forget. If you continue a little further, the trail opens up to a scenic overlook of the Sacramento River, making this quick hike even more rewarding. If you’re short on time but still want to see something amazing, this one is a must!

MOSSBRAE FALLS

One of the most spectacular and breathtaking waterfalls in California, is Mossbrae Falls. But it’s a controversial waterfall and comes with many disclaimers. What makes this waterfall unique is the way its water gently cascades down a moss-covered cliff, creating a curtain-like effect that spans about 50 feet high and 175 feet wide.

Unfortunately, the waterfall and the paths leading to the waterfall, all reside on private land. Thus, hiking to it, is forbidden. That being said, the City of Dunsmuir is aware of this falls’ popularity and history. So in partnership with the Union Pacific Railroad, they have put together a proposal to create a proper designated trail to the falls that would allow people to hike safely and ultimately not trespass on private land. Unfortunately there have been challenges in getting this proposal off the ground. So if you are interested in helping, we strongly recommend donating to the proposals fund!

If you do choose to hike to this falls, you do so at your own risk. We found parking and starting at the Hedge Creek Falls Trailhead, and wading through and across the river, allowed us to access the falls with the least amount of walking along the railroad tracks.

MT SHASTA VIEWPOINT

Located in Burney Falls State Park, this 129-foot waterfall is known for its stunning, multi-tiered cascade that seems to appear out of nowhere.
