CLOSEST AIRPORT TO BIG SUR
There are actually three major international airports that you could fly in and out of if you are visiting from another state or country:
- San José Mineta International Airport (SJC)
- San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
- San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport (OAK)
All three airports are in the San Francisco Bay Area, but the quickest and easiest to travel in and out of, is San José Mineta International Airport. It’s also the closest to Big Sur.
WEATHER IN BIG SUR
Big Sur’s weather is generally mild and coastal, with temperatures rarely reaching extremes, though conditions can change quickly due to its mountainous and coastal mix. Summers are typically warm, with highs averaging in the 60s and 70s°F (15-25°C). But coastal fog often blankets the area in the mornings, especially in June and July. As the fog lifts by midday, you’ll usually get clear, sunny skies. Fall often brings the best weather. With more sun and fewer clouds, while winters are cooler and wetter, with highs in the 50s°F (10-15°C) and the most rainfall from December through March. Spring is mild and often breezy, with beautiful wildflowers blooming across the hillsides. Layers are key year-round, as temperatures can vary widely from the coast to inland areas and throughout the day.
BEST TIME TO VISIT BIG SUR
The best time to visit Big Sur is generally in the spring (April to June) and fall (September to November), when the weather is mild, the crowds are smaller, and the natural beauty is at its peak. Spring brings lush greenery, wildflowers, and the tail end of the migratory whale season, while fall offers warm weather, fewer tourists, and vibrant sunsets. Summer, though popular for its long days, can be crowded and often foggy, while winter sees fewer visitors and cooler temperatures, but it’s still a great time for those seeking solitude and dramatic coastal views.
HIGHWAY 1 ROAD CLOSURE
As beautiful as the stretch of Highway 1 in Big Sur is, it is quite prone to washouts and landslides. Nearly every single year, there is a Highway 1 road closure of some sort. In 2024 alone, there were three major closures that kept much of Big Sur inaccessible for most of the spring and early summer. And at the time of this writing, there is still a portion of Highway 1 that remains closed, and will remain closed until mid-2025. Thankfully, most of the parks, hotels and things to do are located to the north of the Highway 1 road closure.
If you are hoping to visit Limekiln State Park or Kirk Creek Campground, the only way to access either of these places is from the south. There are a few resources we’d recommend to stay up to date on Highway 1 road closures if you’re planning a trip to Big Sur:
HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU NEED?
To experience Big Sur’s highlights, plan for at least a day. Though two to three days allow for a more relaxed exploration of its scenic spots, trails, and coastal viewpoints. A one day visit is ideal if you’re focusing on the main attractions, like Bixby Creek Bridge, McWay Falls, and a few short hikes along Highway 1. It is also ideal if you’re staying in Big Sur or the nearby Carmel & Monterey. With two or more days, you can explore Big Sur’s quieter beaches, like Pfeiffer Beach, hike deeper into the redwoods, and enjoy leisurely stops at local cafes and art galleries. A weekend trip gives you time to savor the beauty at a slower pace. And a longer stay lets you dive into more remote trails, camping experiences, and hidden gems.

BIXBY BRIDGE

COAST BIG SUR – CLOSED
Another iconic location along Big Sur’s coast, was Coast Big Sur. Known for its rooftop café, Coast offered a menu of fresh, locally-sourced bites, including gourmet flatbreads, seasonal salads, and indulgent desserts, all served with stunning ocean views. The property also featured an art gallery and boutique showcasing local craftsmanship, making it a perfect stop for a leisurely meal and a dose of creative inspiration. Unfortunately, the owners recently decided to close and sell the property. As of this writing, there is no update on whether the new owners will retain the business as it was, or reopen as something new.
