OCEAN COVE CAMPGROUND: CALIFORNIA’S MOST UNDERRATED CAMPGROUND

When people think of oceanfront camping in California, places like Big Sur, Mendocino, and the Central Coast usually get all the attention. Yet tucked along a rugged stretch of Sonoma County coastline is a campground that rarely makes the “best campgrounds in California” lists despite having one of the most impressive coastal settings we’ve experienced. After camping at Ocean Cove Campground twice—we’re convinced it’s one of California’s most underrated campgrounds.

Perched directly above the Pacific Ocean, Ocean Cove Campground offers dramatic blufftop views, easy beach access, and a laid-back atmosphere that feels increasingly difficult to find along the California coast. While it may not have the name recognition of more famous campgrounds, that’s exactly what makes Ocean Cove Campground such a California gem.

WHERE IS OCEAN COVE CAMPGROUND?

Ocean Cove Campground is located along California’s rugged Sonoma Coast, approximately 20 miles north of Jenner and just off Highway 1. The campground sits on the bluffs of Ocean Cove Beach, offering easy access to the shoreline and incredible views of the Pacific Ocean.

One of the things that makes Ocean Cove Campground so special is its location. While it feels remote and secluded, it’s still accessible enough for a weekend trip from the San Francisco Bay Area. Two hours from the Golden Gate bridge and you’re there! The surrounding coastline is filled with dramatic cliffs, rocky coves, and scenic overlooks that make the drive nearly as memorable as the campground itself.

If you are a first-timer on Highway 1, prepare yourself for miles of winding roads. Depending which direction you’re traveling, you can be hugging the cliff’s edge on some turns. And if you’re in an RV or towing a trailer, this drive is definitely not for the faint-hearted.

WHEN IS OCEAN COVE CAMPGROUND OPEN?

Ocean Cove Campground is a seasonal campground that is typically open from April through November. The exact timeframe is dependent on the weather that year. For the Sonoma Coast region, these are the ideal months for sitting outside and enjoying California campgrounds!

Winter storms can create dramatic ocean views, but also dangerous road and campground conditions. With the exposed bluffs and tall trees on the property, wind and rain could really wreck your camping getaway. Additionally, there can be treacherous road conditions on Highway 1 during the rainy months.

GENERAL INFORMATION FOR OCEAN COVE CAMPGROUND

One of the things that surprised us most during our first visit to Ocean Cove Campground was just how large the campground is. From the road, it doesn’t look particularly expansive, but once you arrive, you’ll find a sprawling campground spread across coastal bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

We stayed on blufftop sites during both visits, and the proximity to the ocean was even more impressive than we expected. In many campgrounds, “ocean view” can feel like a stretch. At Ocean Cove Campground, you’re genuinely camping above the water with panoramic coastal views just steps from your campsite. Next time, however, we’d love to try one of the more tucked-away sites to experience a different (and possibly less windy) side of the campground. You can find more details directly on the OCEAN COVE CAMPGROUND SITE.

GETTING A SITE AT OCEAN COVE

Probably one of the most important piece of information to know before you visit is that there are no reservations for Ocean Cove Campground. The campground operates under first-come-first-serve rules. This is great news for campers who have a tough time planning far enough ahead to snag a good campsite 6-months ahead of time. But on the other hand, it can mean you might not get your ideal spot on a popular weekend.

Despite being one of the most underrated campgrounds on the California coast, Ocean Cove Campground isn’t exactly a secret. During both of our visits, the campground felt more crowded than empty, especially in desirable blufftop sections. However, the campground’s large size helps prevent it from feeling overly packed. Additionally, there were always open sites, even on weekend nights. We’ve found that calling ahead can give you a good idea of what’s available.

  • CHECK-IN: Anytime
  • CHECK-OUT: Noon
  • GENERATOR HOURS: 9:00AM-9:00PM
  • QUIET TIME: Begins at 10:00PM

Because there are so many campsites spread throughout the property, visitors can often find a site that matches their preferred camping style. Whether you’re hoping for a blufftop ocean view or a more sheltered campsite tucked away from the wind, Ocean Cove Campground offers more variety than many first-time visitors expect.

CAMPGROUND COST / RATES

Compared to many oceanfront campgrounds in California, Ocean Cove Campground offers excellent value. Visitors can enjoy coastal camping with ocean views at a price point that is often lower than other oceanfront campgrounds in the state.

  • $40+/car per night CASH
  • $45+/car per night CREDIT CARD
  • Group Campsites available $400+ CASH / $450+ CREDIT (1-10 cars)
  • Dogs are $2/dog per day and must always be leashed

For travelers seeking affordable coastal camping, this camground provides a rare opportunity to camp near the ocean without paying premium prices.

OCEAN COVE CAMPGROUND STORE

OCEAN COVE STORE

Located directly across the street from the campground entrance, the campground store provides a convenient place to pick up camping essentials. Find snacks, beverages – including adult beverages, firewood, and other basic supplies at surprisingly reasonable prices. While it may not replace a full grocery store, it’s a welcome convenience for campers who forgot an item or need a last-minute refill during their stay. We stopped in every day for a couple canned cocktails to take back to the site.

OCEAN COVE CAMPGROUND AMENITIES

Ocean Cove Campground isn’t the place to visit if you’re looking for luxury camping amenities. Instead, the biggest draw is the campground’s location and access to the coastline. The blufftop campsites, expansive ocean views, and direct connection to nature are what make this campground stand out.

  • Potable water
  • Porta-Potties
  • Picnic table
  • Fire pit
  • Showers (requires quarters)

If you’re traveling in an RV or camper van (like us!), you should note that there are not sites with water or electricity hookups, or a dump station available.

WHAT TYPE OF EQUIPMENT IS ALLOWED?

Ocean Cove Campground accommodates a variety of camping styles, making it a versatile destination for different types of travelers. Tent campers, RV travelers (up to 40ft), camper vans, and overlanding setups can all find suitable accommodations throughout the campground.

This flexibility makes Ocean Cove Campground especially appealing for road trippers exploring Highway 1, as well as travelers looking for a simple coastal basecamp.

CAMPGROUND WEATHER

The weather at Ocean Cove Campground is heavily influenced by its coastal location. You can search the weather for Jenner, but for more accurate information, search for Walsh Landing. The main difference you will find are wind speeds. Throughout the year, you’ll experience coastal fog, ocean breezes, and rapidly changing conditions are common.

Layers are ESSENTIAL regardless of the season. Sunny mornings can be perfect, but afternoon winds, clouds, and fog – you may wear every piece of clothing in one day! And if you plan on tent camping or setting up an awning, ensure that you have very strong stakes. The wind can be very serious out on the point.

CAMPGROUND ACTIVITIES

BUY OYSTERS ONSITE

One of the more unique perks of Ocean Cove Campground is the opportunity to buy fresh oysters onsite during many weekends. Grab them raw or barbecued and enjoy them at your campsite! It’s a fun and delicious way to enjoy a local Sonoma Coast favorite without ever leaving the campground.

The rocky shoreline near Ocean Cove Campground is great for tidepooling during low tide. Keep an eye out for sea stars, crabs, anemones, and other marine life hiding among the rocks.

Ocean Cove Campground provides convenient ocean access for small boats and kayaks. It’s a great way to explore the coastline from a different perspective and spend a day out on the water.

HIKING TRAILS

Ocean Cove Campground is sandwiched between two Sonoma Regional Parks: Salt Point and Stillwater Cove. Salt Point offers a stunning bluff trail, where at Stillwater Cove you can hike a gorgeous redwood canyon to a pristine cove. Stillwater Cove can be accessed from the campground with a short walk along Highway 1, or both are drivable within just a couple minutes. Both parks charge a day-use fee if you park.

OCEAN COVE BAR & GRILL

Having the Ocean Cove Bar & Grill across the street is certainly convenient, especially after a long day of exploring the coast. During our stay, we stopped in for lunch and found the experience enjoyable overall. The food was decent, although it wasn’t necessarily the highlight of the trip.

That said, the views and staff were what stood out most. The restaurant’s location overlooking the coast creates a relaxing atmosphere, and the friendly service made it a pleasant place to grab a meal.

OCEAN COVE CAMPGROUND: CALIFORNIA’S MOST UNDERRATED CAMPGROUND

After two visits, Ocean Cove Campground continues to be one of our favorite gems along the California coast. While it may not offer the polished facilities or national recognition of some of California’s more famous campgrounds, it delivers something arguably more valuable: an authentic coastal camping experience with incredible ocean views.

What makes Ocean Cove Campground so underrated isn’t that nobody knows about it. Rather, it’s that it rarely gets mentioned alongside California’s most celebrated campgrounds despite offering many of the same things people love about those destinations. If you’re searching for oceanfront camping, dramatic bluff views, and a campground that feels a little less discovered, Ocean Cove Campground deserves a place on your California camping bucket list.
