If you’re looking for a national park that feels wildly different from anywhere else in California, Lassen Volcanic National Park deserves a spot on your itinerary. Often overshadowed by California’s more famous parks, Lassen offers a unique landscape shaped by volcanic forces. Where steaming fumaroles, colorful geothermal features, cinder cones, lava fields, and alpine lakes exist within a relatively compact area. CHECK ROAD CONDITIONS AND PARK ALERTS

Lassen Volcanic National Park has seasonal road closures that can last from October until will into July. This area of the state accumulates snow, and the main roads through the park are not plowed until the end of the season. In addition to road closures, there can be trail closures or other alerts throughout the park. Always be sure to check on the NPS LASSEN VOLCANIC NATIONAL PARK ALERTS & CONDITIONS page for the most up-to-date information on park roads and conditions.

DOWNLOAD OFFLINE MAPS AND TRAILS

As with most national parks, cell service can be spotty or non-existent. While this is perfect for disconnecting and becoming one with nature, it is not great for trying to drive from one trail to the next. You can download maps on Google Maps and Apple Maps for free. And with the paid version of AllTrails, you can also download your trail maps. Also, you can now download park information from THE NPS APP, allowing for offline use! View interactive maps, alerts, trail info, things to do, and more, all while exploring the park in real time.

PREPARE FOR A LOT OF DRIVING

Whether you’re trying to cover the park in one day or multiple, a fair amount of driving is involved. The points of interest and roads to access them are not always convenient. And while most roads are paved, the road to the Cinder Cone Trail includes several miles of washboard forest road. On these types of roads you need to take your time and have a lot of patience. These types of scenarios can make for a much longer day if you are not prepared. This One Day Itinerary is at least two hours of driving, not including where you plan to start and end your day.

HIKE CINDER CONE & PAINTED DUNES

CINDER CONE TRAIL IN LASSEN VOLCANIC NATIONAL PARK
CINDER CONE TRAIL IN LASSEN VOLCANIC NATIONAL PARK

If you only have one day in Lassen Volcanic National Park, start your morning at the Cinder Cone Trail. Located in the park’s northeastern corner, this area feels completely different from the rest of Lassen. The landscape is barren, rugged, and otherworldly, making it easy to forget you’re still in California.

The trail begins with a relatively easy walk across lava fields before climbing steadily up loose volcanic cinders toward the summit. While the final ascent can be challenging due to the unstable footing, the views waiting at the top are well worth the effort. Think one step forward, slide back two. As you gain elevation, you’ll begin to appreciate just how dramatic Lassen’s volcanic history truly is.

The hike to Cinder Cone and the Painted Dunes is easily one of the most unique experiences in Lassen Volcanic National Park. Unlike many hikes where the destination is the summit itself, this trail rewards you with incredible scenery throughout the entire journey.

From the top of Cinder Cone, you’ll have sweeping views of the Painted Dunes below. These colorful volcanic hills are streaked with shades of red, orange, black, and gold, creating a landscape that feels more like another planet than Northern California. The colors were created when volcanic ash and pumice oxidized after eruptions, leaving behind one of the park’s most photogenic features. Nearby, the Fantastic Lava Beds provide another reminder of the powerful forces that shaped this landscape.

Among all the hikes we’ve done in Lassen Volcanic National Park, this one remains our favorite because it showcases just how diverse and unexpected the park can be. And is the one we always recommend to first time visitors to the park!

DRIVE THE SCENIC HIGHWAY

LAKE HELEN – LASSEN VOLCANIC NATIONAL PARK HIGHWAY

After your hike, spend some time exploring Lassen Volcanic National Park’s scenic highway. Highway 89 cuts through the heart of the park and connects many of its most famous attractions. Unlike some national park roads that simply get you from point A to point B, the drive itself is part of the experience.

As you travel through the park, you’ll pass alpine lakes, volcanic peaks, lava flows, meadows, and expansive mountain views. The scenery changes constantly, making it worth pulling over at several overlooks along the way. Additionally, driving the highway provides a great opportunity to appreciate the incredible diversity packed into this relatively small national park.

One of the things we love most about Lassen Volcanic National Park is how quickly the landscape transforms. Within a single drive, you can move from lush forests to barren volcanic terrain and then back again. After seeing Cinder Cone and the colors of the Painted Dunes, the vibrant blue and green of these alpine lakes are such an incredible contrast.

HIKE BUMPASS HELL TRAIL

No visit to Lassen Volcanic National Park would be complete without hiking the Bumpass Hell Trail. Despite its unusual name, this is one of the park’s most popular attractions and for good reason.

The trail begins with beautiful mountain views before descending into the largest hydrothermal area in the park. As you approach the basin, the landscape starts to change. Steam rises from the ground, sulfur fills the air, and colorful geothermal features begin appearing around every corner. The boardwalk route allows visitors to safely explore the area while protecting the fragile environment below. Bumpass Hell is part of the park’s active hydrothermal system, which includes boiling pools, mud pots, thermal ground, and fumaroles.

Although Lassen Peak hasn’t erupted in over a century, places like Bumpass Hell serve as a reminder that Lassen Volcanic National Park is still very much alive beneath the surface.

SULPHUR WORKS STEAM VENTS & MUD POTS

Before leaving the park, take time to stop at some of Lassen Volcanic National Park’s additional geothermal features. While Bumpass Hell is the most famous, you’ll find steaming vents and bubbling mud pots throughout several areas of the park. The Sulphur Works are by far the easiest to visit!

Just a few steps from the parking lot, you can watch steam rise from cracks in the earth. This is a fascinating experience, especially when you realize you’re witnessing evidence of ongoing volcanic activity. These vents, known as fumaroles, release hot gases and steam from deep underground and are among the most visible signs that the volcanic system remains active.

For many visitors, these geothermal features become the most memorable part of the day. There are plenty of national parks with beautiful mountains and scenic lakes, but very few allow you to stand beside bubbling mud pots and steaming volcanic landscapes. It’s this combination of accessibility and geological wonder that makes Lassen Volcanic National Park such an underrated destination.
